About us

Southwest University (SWU) is a major comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education of China and a key construction school of China “211” Project. Located at the foot of the Jinyun mountain, a national scenic spot in the Beibei District of Chongqing City, and at the bank of beautiful Jialing River, the school is a garden-style university known far and wide, National Advance Unit of Spiritual Civilization, National Advanced Unit in Afforestation and Civilized Campus honored by the Ministry of Education.

Institute of Clean Energy & Advanced Material Institute (ICEAM) in Southwest University was established on March 28, 2011, and Professor Changming LI, Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and first candidate of the “ China 1000 Talent Program of the Southwest University, was offered appointment as the director of the Institute. On the basis of the overseas homecoming group led by Prof. Changming LI, the Institute was built by integrating the existing research specialist staff of the University, 15 in establishment and on the post, among whom there are now 6 professors, 6 associate professors and 1 instructor, 2 administration staff, and 1 guest professor (Professor Yi LU of the Urbana-Champaign branch school of University of Illinois). All core researchers have doctoral degree and overseas research experience. Among the full-time research specialist staff now, there is one Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), and candidate of the “China 1000 Talent Program” of the Organization Department of the Central Committee of the CPC, one, candidate of “New Century Outstanding Talent Program” and one, the winner of the China National Excellent Self-Sponsored Overseas Student”. In addition, there is one, candidate of the “Youth-One-Thousand-Talent Program” of the Organization Department of the Central Committee of the CPC, who is now being actively imported, and one, who has been reported to the short-term program of the “One-Thousand-Talent Program”. Professor Changming LI, Director of the institute, has achieved the following significant honor after he came to work in Southwest University: (1) Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry; (2) Craig visiting professor of Australian National University; (3) “Innovative Talents Awards” of the overseas Chinese; (4)specially invited expert of Chongqing City. There is now one with post-doctorate on the post (subordinate to the mobile post-doctoral station), and another one, who is applying for post-doctorate, 8, who are doctoral candidates, 30 masters, and one, minority backbone of scientific research in training.

The research work of the Institute is mainly centered on the new energy (including fuel cells, solar cells, and lithium lon battery), new materials (including nano-materials, energy materials, biological materials, organic photoelectric materials and chemistry / biosensor materials) and biological nanometer technology and other fields. There is now an experimental working area of about 2700 square meters, instrument and equipment with a value of RMB 16 million yuan. It has now more than 40 pieces of large equipment including the transmission electron microscope, scanning electron microscope, x-ray diffractometer, and infrared spectrometer, etc.  

We have now gained approvement of four scientific research platforms: (1) Chongqing Key Laboratory for Advanced Materials & Technologies of Clean Energies, (2) Chongqing Engineering Research Center for Rapid Diagnosis of Dread Diseases, (3) Chongqing Innovation and Entrepreneurship Base for Overseas High-level Talents, and (4) Chongqing International Science and Technology Cooperation Base, with a total construction funding of above 7 million yuan. At present, it has undertaken 14 provincial- and ministry-level programs with a total funding of 5 million yuan, and applied for 1 program of the 973 Project with a funding of 1.95 million yuan, expecting to be approved and made known to the public in the near future.

We have made substantial progress in communication at home and abroad: (1) applied for the approvement of one program of Chongqing International Science and Technology Cooperation Base, united with the Advanced Carbon Material Research Center of American Case Western Reserve University, mainly led by Professor Liming Dai, a world famous scientist; (2) applied for one program of the International Cooperation and Joint Research Center of the Ministry of Education, united with the Energy Material Center of Cornell University of American, mainly led by Professor HéctorAbruña, an internationally famous scientist; (3) substantial cooperation has been built in scientific research and post-graduates exchanges and communication with Cornell University, Case Western Reserve University, Australian National University, Australian University of Wollongong, Singapore Nanyang Technological University and other internationally well-known universities; (4) applied for the major program of Chongqing Municipal Post-Graduate Educational Reform, with the topic of “Research and practice of the Internationally Cooperative and Joint-Training Mode of Post-Graduates”. (5) Domestically, built good cooperative relations with the Institute of Physics of Chinese Institute of Sciences and cooperated in the technological tackling of key problems in biological sensoring, and jointly applied for one of “973” Programs; cooperated with Chinese Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, and Nanchang University and other units and jointly applied for one of “973” programs; planned and jointly applied for the key laboratory of the Ministry of Education; planned and established collaborated laboratory with Capital Bio Chip Technologies and launched technological cooperation in bio-chip.

We have successfully applied for interdiscipline subject doctoral station for “clean energy sciences”, and we take in master and doctoral candidates, not only providing them with outstanding scientific research and working conditions, but actively encouraging and helping them expand international visual field. The five doctors, jointly cultivated overseas, have all made high-level achievements, and published many high-quality SCI papers. The characteristics of ICEAM’s paying equal attention to both scientific research and application will provide post-graduates with wide career prospect in different fields and opportunities to make further study overseas. Students with physics, chemistry, biology and material background are welcome to register for the examination (recommendation or exemption from examination) of the master and doctoral candidates of our institute.
